Located in the beautiful BC Coastal Mountain Range, Glacier Air offers exceptional Mountain Flying Training for licenced pilots,  taught by pilots who actually fly in the mountains every day. Whether in your plane or ours, we teach the skills and knowledge necessary to fly safely in mountainous regions.

Although Transport Canada does not offer a specific flight training program for Mountain Flying, any seasoned pilot will tell you to acquire basic training before heading out into the mountains. More accidents occur when inexperienced pilots venture outside their comfort zone and into conditions beyond their experience. Understanding winds, density altitude, and rapidly changing weather are but a few of the outside factors to be considered when flying into and around those rugged peaks!

Whether you only have a few hours or a few days, Glacier Air is able to customize a mountain training program to suit your needs and skill level. A single flight can teach you the basics of mountain flying with emphasis on Pilot Decision Making and knowing when to go and when to stay on the ground. Multiple flights will push your comfort level to expand your limits, knowledge, and skills while under the safe supervision of a well-qualified instructor.

Basic Mountain Flying Course Example:

FLIGHT 1 – approximately 1 hr

• Stalls: climbing turning
• Spiral dive recoveries
• Crossing ridges and flying valleys
• Minimum radius turns

FLIGHT 2 – approximately 1 hr

• Forced approach
• Precautionary approach
• Short and soft field techniques

FLIGHT 3 – approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hrs

The old saying goes, “Only tykes fly Trikes, but real pilots fly Tail Wheel!” Although it is not true, many old timer pilots will argue that common tricycle gear aircraft don’t require stick and rudder skills to fly. True, they are easier to ground handle, but once in the air, most planes fly the same. So, why the need to take special tail wheel training?

Handling a tail wheel on the ground is simply different than a tricycle gear aircraft. Your forward visibility is reduced and you are more vulnerable to winds due to the nose high attitude of the aircraft while on the ground. Failure to properly handle a tailwheel aircraft while maneuvering on the ground can result in ground looping or cartwheeling the aircraft. So, why fly a tail dragger then? Tailwheel aircraft provide greater clearance between the propeller and the ground, making this configuration more desirable when operating on rough gravel, grass, ice or other landing surfaces. These aircraft also tend to have a shorter takeoff and landing roll and are more adaptable for the application of skis and/or floats, thus making tail wheel aircraft the configuration of choice for most bush pilots and remote air operators. In addition, many advanced composite aircraft and specialty use aircraft prefer the tail wheel configuration as they produce less drag, therefore, they can fly faster.

Emergency Maneuvers, unusual attitudes, basic and advanced aerobatic flight in a tailwheel aircraft is the best way to improve your skills and make you a safer pilot… plus it’s FUN!

Glacier Air offers emergency maneuver and aerobatic training in our Cessna 172’s and our Bellanca Super Decathlon 8KCAB aircraft. Emergency maneuver training encompasses a vast array of movements and situations, all with the intent to prepare you as a pilot for the “what if” situation. Each course is custom tailored to meet the students experience level and designed to challenge the student and push their comfort level in a safe and controlled environment

EMT COURSE – Ground School/Briefings

The following is a list of topics you should be knowledgeable in prior to participating in emergency maneuver training and basic aerobatics.

• Theory of Flight – review of the important facts
• Aircraft performance and structural limitations
• Medical factors and human tolerances
• Aircraft pre-flight inspection, including special considerations for aerobatics
• Considerations for recovery from unplanned maneuvers
• Flight safety considerations
• Pilot decision-making concepts

EMT COURSE – Flight Training

EMT is designed to bring you to a high level of proficiency through a series of exercises whereby the student is able to explore the envelope and limitations of the aircraft in a safe and controlled environment. Flight training includes:

• General flying skills
• Steep turns and collision avoidance
• Unusual attitude awareness, recognition, and recovery – including spiral dive, stalls, and spins
• Emergency procedures – including control failures and engine failure
• Basic Aerobatics including but not limited to Aileron Rolls, Stall Turns, Wing Over, and Loops.

Although each program is customized to meet the individual student’s experience level, a typical program will include approximately 5 hours of ground briefing and 5 hours of flight training. Training will be conducted in both the C172 and the Super Decathlon aircraft.

Glacier Air offers professional one-on-one Aerobatic Flight Training. Our beautiful 180 hp Bellanca Super Decathlon 8KCAB is certified and approved for aerobatic flight training, including inverted flight for up to 2 minutes. Whether you simply want to experience a few loops and rolls so you can tell your friends you’ve done it, or if you want to launch a career in air show flying, this little plane is perfect for getting you started! Not only is aerobatic exciting and fun, it expands your knowledge and improves your overall flying skills, making you a safer, more proficient pilot!

Prerequisites

To qualify for Aerobatic Flight Training, you must:

• be at least 17 years of age
• hold a valid Canadian Private Pilot Licence (or higher) and current Medical Certificate
• be medically fit and prepared, both mentally and physically, to withstand unusual flight attitudes and G-forces
• be able to demonstrate proficiency at ground handling, taxi, takeoff, and landing tailwheel aeroplanes and operate constant speed, fuel injected aeroplanes

Ground School

Although no Transport Canada written examination is required, you will need to understand the applicable theory of flight and flight rules governing aerobatic flight operations. The following represents a list of questions and topics you must be able to answer or be knowledgeable of before commencing aerobatic training:

• Theory of Flight applicable to aerobatics
• Aircraft structural limitations
• Medical factors and human tolerances
• Aerobatic pre-flight inspection
• Considerations for recovery from unplanned maneuvers
• Flight safety considerations
• Regulations and airspace restrictions relating to aerobatic flight
• Pilot decision-making concepts

Stage 1 Flight Training

The first stage provides a foundation for Aerobatic training. Aerobatic flight training is designed to bring you to a high level of proficiency through a series of exercises whereby each individual maneuver is flown to a competent level before you progress on to the next.

The following is the standard sequence of training:

• General flying skills
• Loops
• Aileron Rolls
• Stabilized Inverted and Inverted Recoveries
• Aileron Rolls with a Push
• Slow Rolls
• Stall Turns/Hammerheads
• Wing Over
• Barrel Rolls
• Flick/Snap Rolls

Stage 2 Flight Training

Perform combination maneuvers followed by aerobatic sequences up to the Standard Level/Sportsman Level Sequences.

• Rolls Off the Top (Immelmanns)
